The long-awaited wedding of musician 2Face Idibia and Annie Macaulay Idibia was a glittering double affair that took place in Nigeria and Dubai; however it proved controversial due to lavish gifts to the stars from public officials.

The couple chose to have their white wedding in Dubai, on the beach at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. According to reports the wedding was attended by a host of Nigeria’s top celebrities. Nigeria Entertainment Today reported that some of the stars in attendance included: Rita Dominic, Don Jazzy, Jim Iyke, Kunle Afolayan, Banky W, Ini Edo, DR. Sid, Davido, Chidi Mokeme, Kate Henshaw, Juliet Ibrahim and many more.

The couple, who are believed to have dated for more than a decade prior to their wedding and have a child together, were at the centre of a controversy as a result of their lavish wedding gifts from government officials. At their traditional wedding in singer Annie’s home state Akwa Ibom Governor Godswill Akpabio gifted the couple with a Prado SUV as well as N3m to send guests to their white wedding in Dubai.

In a statement earlier this month, the governor defended his gift, saying:

“That looking carefully at the surrounding events in perspective, Mrs

Annie Idibia, nee Macaulay is a daughter of Akwa Ibom State and the gift of a Prado SUV from her governor is only a gesture of love and goodwill. Her resolve to stand by her husband on his journey right from his days of youthful beginnings to stardom even in the face of challenges was commendable and a true attribute of the Akwa Ibom women.

“That It is however unbecoming that mischief makers and enemies of progress have decided to inflame the social media with incongruous reports that the State Government is sponsoring an entourage of party supporters to the wedding in Dubai, when in fact the Government is only sponsoring the travel expenses of twenty of her family members at an estimated cost of roughly Three Million Naira (N3,000,000.00) only.

“I wish to therefore urge members of the public to discountenance the misrepresentations made out of a well-intentioned act of the governor.”

Following the ceremony in Dubai, the couple also received a Chevrolet Corvette Luxury Coupe worth more than N12m. The gift was reportedly (Nigeria Entertainment Today; Bella Naija, ModernGhana) from Senate President David Mark, who is from 2Face’s home town of Idoma, Benue State. The governor later denied through a spokesman that the gift was from him. On his Facebook page, 2Face has a photo of the car with a card on it stating it is a gift from the senator.
