Warid Telecom has today confirmed that it has been bought by Airtel, just like we exclusively told eleven days ago. A message from Warid confirmed the merger will leverage scale as well as the competitive advantages of both Warid and Airtel operations in Uganda, offering benefits to customers in the form of a wider network, affordable voice and data services and enhanced customer care arising out of formidable synergies from both operations.

Today our shareholders have entered into a definitive agreement with Bharti Airtel under which Bharti Airtel will fully acquire Warid’s
Uganda operations with the intent of merging Warid’s operations in Uganda with Airtel Uganda. This agreement is subject to regulatory and statutory approvals and once approved will combine the strengths as well as the opportunities of both operations to provide over 7.4 million customers in Uganda with world-class services.

This merger will leverage scale as well as the competitive advantages of both Warid and Airtel operations in Uganda, offering benefits to customers in the form ofa wider network, affordable voice and data services and enhanced customer care arising out of formidable synergies from both operations. At a later date, the existing 2.8 million Warid Uganda customers would join Airtel’s global operationn that serves over 260 million customers globally who enjoys benefits like the ‘One Airtel’ network with lower roaming rates across Africa and South Asia and an exciting bouquet of innovative services.
While we wait for the required regulatory and other approvals, we need to continue to service our customers with the same zest that we have been demonstrating all these years. We will continue to ensure more customers come on to our network, enjoy the same levels of world class service and continue to compete in the market place.
Following the finalization of all the approvals and meeting all the regulatory requirements, with the assistance of a fully dedicated project teams from both sides, we shall embark on the integration of the two businesses in Uganda in a seamless and smooth manner.
