Electricity regulatory body UMEME is set to disconnect Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) over a close to shs4 billion electricity bill.
Xclusive UG has in its possession a letter from UMEME Income Manager Clare Mukasa to UBC acting Managing Director Paul Kihika informing him that his organization (UBC) has up to the end of the World Cup next month to clear an outstanding bill of shs3.9 billionor else face a blackout.
“No further notice of disconnection will be given,” the letter reads in part. This unpaid bill is as of 31st May 2014.
The letter further reads: “We wish to put our frustration at your organisation’s lack of commitment and interest to settle these accounts.”
The letter further states that, it is in respect of the enormous interest ‘our country has in football and in recognition and appreciation to His Excellency’s sponsorship of the transmission of the World Cup’ that UMEME has postponed disconnection.
The letter is copied to the Prime Minister among others.
