Sheikh Hassan Kirya, the Kibuli spokesperson has just been gunned down near the Bweyogerere flyover by assailants riding on a boda boda.

Another four people, including a truck driver, are said to have been shot by stray bullets in the fracas.

This happened a few hours ago at 11pm. According to eyewitnesses, the sheik had disembarked from his car to buy groceries from a roadside shop, a scenario reminiscent of state attoney Joan Kagezi’s death in Kiwatule months ago.

All roads

connecting to Bweyogerere have been blocked as police mounts a hunt for the killers.

This comes on the heels of other killings of Muslim leaders.

In January this year sheikh Muhammad Yunus Kamoga, the leader of Uganda’s Muslim Tabliq group and 17 others were charged with killing two fellow clerics, a case police said was linked to Islamist rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo.

“There’s a link definitely to the Allied Democratic Forces,” police spokesman Fred Enanga told the media then, referring to the small group of Ugandan-led ADF rebels, who have terrorised pockets of eastern DR Congo for the last two decades.

Enanga further said that those charged in court had wanted “to eliminate their colleagues” because they had tried to discourage people from “joining rebel ranks.”
