The Bishop of West Ankole diocese Rt Rev Johnson Twinomujuni (pictured)- acting on behalf of Church of Uganda- has with immediate effect suspended Rev Canon Benon Mwebaze of Bwera C.O.U over allegations of sexual Misbehavior, Mknewslink reports.
It is alleged that the Rev. Mwebaze committed the offence at his former station before he was transferred to Bwera Church of Uganda.
Speaking to Mknews over the weekend, the bishop said that his office is carrying out investigations to ascertain the truth.
The Bishop added that once they find out that the claims are true, the Rev .Canon will be dismissed from the church with disgrace.
This is not the first case where religious leaders are accused of sexual misconduct this year alone.
In January, the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, summoned all the clerics and their spouses for a crisis meeting.
Luwalira’s move came after it emerged that another city priest had allegedlysired a child out of wedlock. This was after the suspension of the Rev. Ronald Kalende a few weeks before over a sex scandal.
On Monday, it was revealed that a paternity Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test had confirmed that Kazo Church of Uganda priest, Kalende had a child with his church choir pianist, 23-year-old Perusi Serena Nabirye.
Luwalira then ordered the diocesan secretary, the Rev. Cannon Kaweesa, to suspend another cleric who is alleged to have sired a child out of wedlock. The priest is based in Kabusu, according to inside sources.
Following the continued scandals, the office of the bishop of Namirembe Diocese ran radio announcements summoning all clerics — archdeacons, reverends, deacons and catechists as well as their spouses to go for a “must-attend” crisis meeting at Namirembe.
The announcement emphasised that only the sick or those at educational institutions who require express permission to be away from the institutions were exempted from attending the meeting.
The priests who are under suspension were also asked to stay away from the crisis meeting.
