Tycoon Sulaiman Mbuga Kabangala, better known as SK Mbuga, has shot back at tax body Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Furious Mbuga insists that even URA is governed under the Uganda laws and they can’t just threaten to slap a travel ban on him or impound his cars over alleged tax evasion.
Mbuga said: “Uganda is a country of authority but no one is above the law. #Kati zaabike.”
He dared to take on the tax body until this issue is resolved.
Last week URA moved to impound Mbuga’s expensive cars (Hummers) over a Shs219 million tax debt.
However the tax body’s efforts hit a dead endafter the businessman hid the cars.
In a letter dated August 15 to the Internal Affairs Ministry, URA Acting Commissioner General, Ms Doris Akol states, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 105 (1) of the Income Tax Act Cap 340, I hereby certify that the above mentioned person has an outstanding tax liability of UGX. 219,155, 869 and the same continues to attract interest until it is fully paid as per the relevant tax laws. You are therefore requested to prevent the said tax defaulter (Mr Mbuga) from leaving Uganda until he pays the aforesaid tax liability.”
The letter is copied to Mbuga.
Mbuga insists he is not aware of the taxes and wants URA to show him how they came up to that amount.
