11 blind students killed in fire ahead of Princess Anne visit to school

To conclude her Uganda trip, the Princess Royal will be attending a truck driving demonstration by students of Safe Way Right Way, a nonprofit dedicated to achieve safer roads in Uganda.

11 students have been confirmed dead and 6  critically injured after a fire gutted Salama School for the Blind in Luga Village, Ntanzi parish, Ntejeru Kisoga town council in Mukono.

The fired happened at around 1am.

According to Deputy PRO KMP, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the cause of the fire is still unknown. Investigations are already underway.

“The Police at Mukono are investigating a fire outbreak that took place today at about 1am at SALAMA School for the Blind in Luga Village , Ntanzi parish , Ntejeru Kisoga town council in Mukono district. 

The cause of the fire is currently unknown but so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire have been confirmed while 6 are in critical conditions and admitted at Herona Hospital in Kisoga .

More details will be availed as soon as possible,” afande Owoyesigire said.

It’s now not clear if British Princess Royal Princess Anne & her husband Sir Timothy Laurence who were scheduled to visit Salama school tomorrow on their 4-day visit to Uganda will go ahead with the visit.

Princess Anne will headlining charity events as she has always been very much involved in this kind of work. According to the royal website, the Princess Royal has been president of Save the Children since 1970 and worked with organizations for people with disabilities across the United Kingdom.

During her time in Uganda, Anne, Princess Royal, will be opening the first commercial bank in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, alongside the financial solutions non-profit Opportunity International (via Omid Scobie). The community is located in the Isingiro District in the south of Uganda, and is the oldest refugee settlement in Africa, according to UN Habitat. She will also make a stop at the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in the name of Save the Children UK.

Next in the schedule is a visit to Salama School for the Blind, where Princess Anne will meet with deaf-blind students. The school was co-founded in 1999 by a blind educator who wanted to provide accessible education to the blind community in central Uganda, per Stories for Human Rights. To conclude her Uganda trip, the Princess Royal will be attending a truck driving demonstration by students of Safe Way Right Way, a nonprofit dedicated to achieve safer roads in Uganda.
