Former Security Minister Gen Elly Tumwine has died.
Elly who was one of the few surviving Generals of the 1986 bush war of the NRM, died at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was airlifted recently as he battled cancer -related complications.

Details about his death and ailments remain scanty as the family hasn’t spoken out.
Elly Tumwine’s Profile
- Tumwine retired from active miltary service in July 2022 at the rank of General.
- He served as commander of the National Resistance Army – NRA from 1984 to 1987, a period during which the NRA rebels took power in a military coup.
- He served as Minister of State for Defence in 1989 and was appointed Director General of the External Security Organization (ESO) from 1994 until 1996.
- In 1996, he was appointed a Presidential Adviser, a position he served in from 1996 until 1998.
Tumwine has also continuously represented the UPDF in Parliament since 1986.

The General, a historical member of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) High Command, looked frail and was reportedly wheeled through the airport to take the flight.
The health of Gen Tumwine, who hails from Mbarara District, has been a subject of public speculation for a while, including when he was still a Cabinet minister.

Tributes for the deceased have started trickling in.
Agriculture minister Frank Tumwebaze has described the death of the deceased as a great blow to the country.
