KABALE – The Kabale municipality mayor, Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha today appealed to the government to reconsider the deployment of Local Defense Units (LDUs) in villages to combat the rising incidents of theft crimes.
In an interview with our reporter in his office at Kabale Municipal headquarters, stating that while the government has introduced numerous initiatives, he remains doubtful about their effectiveness in addressing the increasing theft issues that are pressurizing Kabale district and its surrounding areas.
Byamugisha further highlighted that the government has implemented various programs to alleviate poverty, but theft of animals continues to escalate, causing residents to live in fear and secure their properties even at night. He noted that such measures negatively impact people’s health as they are forced to remain confined indoors.
He therefore called upon security authorities in the district to communicate with the president and propose the screening and recruitment of disciplined youths to work as LDUs in different areas as a way to combat theft crimes and also redirect young people away from unproductive activities like unregulated betting.
