For many Africans, especially Ugandans, who relocate to Europe for greener pastures, the biggest challenge has always been food.
Forget the weather, food consumed has always been the biggest worry to many.
In Africa, most people are used to fresh foods straight from the gardens. Fresh matooke, fresh beans, meat, greens, name it.
In Europe, it’s hard to come by such nutritious organic, natural foodstuffs.
Most crave for such foods but mostly in vain.
However since 2023, some Ugandans and Africans at large have found a solution.

Akatale, an Amsterdam, Netherlands based food company has got Ugandans and Africans based in Europe covered.
Akatale- founded in 2023 by Joanna Yeboah a Ugandan entrepreneur has served people based in Europe with fresh organic foods from Uganda.

Joanna says she was driven by her heartfelt desire to feed her sons healthy, organic produce deeply rooted in African culture while living in the European diaspora. As a mother raising her children far from the African continent, Joanna was determined to bridge the gap between her heritage and their daily nourishment. She wanted to ensure her family had access to fresh, wholesome food that not only supported their health but also connected them to their African roots.
This personal mission became the foundation of Akatale—a store dedicated to delivering the freshest organic foods from Africa.
“With every product, Akatale celebrates the rich traditions and flavors of the African continent, offering both nourishment and a sense of home to those in the diaspora and beyond,” she told us.
“At the heart of our philosophy lies a belief that everyone deserves access to fresh, high-quality produce. This conviction drives us to source our fruits and vegetables directly from local gardens, ensuring that every item we offer is as fresh as the moment it was picked. Our commitment to freshness means you can bask in the natural flavors and nutritional benefits of garden-fresh produce, without the burden of exorbitant prices.
As a woman who has journeyed through diverse culinary landscapes, I have seen firsthand the immense value of fresh, unadulterated ingredients. By bringing the vibrant, unspoiled produce from local gardens to your kitchen, we aim to make healthy eating an accessible reality for everyone.
In our quest to infuse the world with the richness of Afro-European fusion food, we understand that accessibility is key. We are not just offering food; we are sharing a piece of our culture, a slice of our heritage. Join us in this culinary journey, and together, let’s make every meal a celebration of freshness and affordability,” she explains.
Joanna says Akatale sells all types of foods including fruits, vegetables, cereals among others.
Akatale is situated in the bustling heart of Amsterdam Zuid Bijlmer ArenaPoort, a prime and accessible location, just steps away from the Bijlmer station—one of the largest transportation hubs in Amsterdam but supplies across Europe.
“Our store is conveniently surrounded by bus stops and other transit connections, making it easy for customers to visit us from anywhere in the city,” she says.
And adds: “At Akatale, we’re more than just a store—we’re a mother’s dream to bring Africa’s nourishing bounty to her family and to yours, no matter where in the world you call home.”
