National Unity Platform Party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has appointed Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe as the new Acting President of the party, ending the four-month tenure of Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru.

In a statement issued on Friday, Kyagulanyi thanked Dr. Zedriga for her service and announced that Nambeshe, the Deputy President for the Eastern Region and Chief Whip in Parliament, will now take over the role in acting capacity.

“For four months, Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, Deputy President Northern Region, has been acting President of our Party. During this period, she has steered the party well and kept the revolution alive. We’re all very grateful for her dedication and service,” Kyagulanyi said.

“As her tenure comes to an end, I am pleased to announce that Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe, Deputy President Eastern Region, will be taking over as acting President of the National Unity Platform. I wish him well and request all leaders and comrades to accord him the necessary support.”

The National Unity Platform’s constitution provides for a rotational acting presidency among the party’s Deputy Presidents.

Dr. Zedriga, who is also the Deputy President for Northern Uganda, assumed the acting role in March 2026. During her tenure she presided over several party mobilisation drives, internal meetings, and regional coordination ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Hon. Nambeshe, the Member of Parliament for Manjiya County in Bududa District, will now be responsible for providing overall political and administrative leadership of the party on behalf of the Party President.

As Chief Whip, Nambeshe has been one of NUP’s most visible faces in Parliament, leading the party’s legislative agenda and caucus strategy.

Party insiders say the rotation is intended to promote regional balance, build leadership capacity, and keep the party structures active across the country.

NUP leaders welcomed the handover and pledged to support the new acting president as the party intensifies preparations for the upcoming election cycle.

The National Unity Platform remains the leading opposition party in Parliament and continues to position itself as the main challenger to the ruling NRM government.
