In a press statement issued yesterday, the police said the operation targeted individuals with known criminal records who were allegedly involved in violent conduct during ongoing presidential campaign activities. The suspects are accused of attacking officers on duty and damaging police vehicles and other government property.

ā€œThe arrests were made to restore order and ensure that campaign activities remain peaceful,ā€ the statement read in part. ā€œThose involved in criminality and acts of violence will face the full force of the law.ā€

This followed altercations with supporters of presidential hopeful, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

Police further cautioned all political candidates and their supporters against engaging in violence, emphasizing that law enforcement remains committed to safeguarding all campaign activities across the country.

ā€œThe Uganda Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting all candidates but will not tolerate criminality or disorder. Any individual choosing this path will be held personally accountable,ā€ the statement added.

Authorities also urged political actors to respect legal frameworks, act civilly, and follow campaign guidelines issued by regulatory stakeholders to maintain peace throughout the electoral season.
