When I joined Forum for Democratic Change, she took me under her wings as Spokesperson for the FDC Women’s League. She ushered me into political activism in Uganda’s newsrooms and political party press conferences. It was Sara who first opened doors for me in many of Kampala’s radio and television stations, where she insisted that I shared space on her weekly talk shows.
When I formed the Women’s Protest Working Group WPG, Sara was among the 40 unnamed women who met regularly to advance strategic planning for the protests that we led, organised and carried out. Although she walked with a support crutch, Sara joined the street protests we held against the kidnaps and femicides of poor women in Uganda. The shameless police even once arrested her when we carried our cooking pots, sauce pans and protest placards and occupied the Uganda Human Rights Commission – UHRC premises in Naguru.
When I organised the #Pads4GirlsUG campaign against dictator Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s failure to deliver a promise to fight menstrual poverty in schools, Sara took me schools in Ngora district, where we distributed sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Mukura, Ngora town and Akissim. She hosted me in her rural district away from Kampala city center.
Although I am a very private person who generally does not host my political comrades at home, Sara is among the few politicians who variously visited my home and shared meals with my children and I. Not only was she my mentor, Sara was also my friend. May she rest well.”
