The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced new dates for the nomination of candidates for the 2025/2026 Presidential Elections, moving the exercise forward by nearly two weeks.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama

In a statement issued on Thursday, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi revealed that the presidential nominations will now take place on 23rd and 24th September 2025, instead of the earlier scheduled dates of 2nd and 3rd October 2025.

Justice Byabakama made the announcement while addressing the nation on the progress and upcoming milestones in the implementation of the Electoral Roadmap for Uganda’s next General Elections.

“The Electoral Commission has adjusted the dates for the nomination of candidates for Presidential Elections 2025/2026, which was earlier scheduled to be conducted on 2nd and 3rd October 2025. The nominations will now take place on 23rd and 24th September 2025,” said Justice Byabakama.

The adjustment is part of broader preparations aimed at ensuring a smooth electoral process and timely delivery of key electoral activities ahead of the polling period.

Key Nomination Dates Released
In addition to the revised presidential nomination schedule, the Electoral Commission also reminded political aspirants and the general public of other critical dates on the electoral calendar. These include:

Nomination of Candidates for Local Governments, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs):
3rd – 12th September 2025
Nomination of Candidates for Parliamentary Elections:
16th – 17th September 2025
Nomination of SIGs Representatives to Local Governments:
8th – 12th December 2025
The Commission urged all aspirants and political parties to align their preparations with the updated roadmap and ensure compliance with the relevant legal and procedural requirements.

Justice Byabakama emphasized the EC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, and called on all stakeholders to play their part in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

The Electoral Commission is expected to release additional details on nomination venues, requirements, and campaign guidelines in the coming weeks as Uganda moves closer to the high-stakes 2026 General Elections.
