President Yoweri Museveni has rejected the resignation of the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission – UHRC, Mariam Wangadya.
Wangadya made the revelation on Tuesday while appearing before the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises – COSASE at Parliament.
According to Wangadya, she had submitted her resignation letter to the President. However, she said Museveni declined to accept it and instead instructed her to continue serving and executing her mandate as UHRC Chairperson.
“I submitted my resignation, but the President rejected it and directed me to continue with the work,” Wangadya told the committee.
The UHRC is a constitutional body mandated to promote and protect human rights in Uganda. It investigates complaints of human rights violations, monitors government compliance with human rights standards, and educates the public on their rights.
Wangadya was appointed UHRC Chairperson in 2021. Her current term and the reasons for her attempted resignation were not disclosed during the COSASE session.
Members of COSASE did not press further on the matter, but said the Commission will continue to engage the UHRC on its mandate and performance.
As of publication, State House had not issued an official statement on the matter.
