President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the release of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, according to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Gen. Muhoozi disclosed the development on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in a post on X, saying the directive had come directly from President Museveni.
“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Muhoozi said, referring to Among by her initials.
The announcement represents a dramatic turn in the security and political saga surrounding Among, who has been under restrictions at her residence for about three months amid investigations involving allegations of corruption, money laundering and financial impropriety linked to Parliament.
In a separate exchange on X, Muhoozi went further, indicating that Among would not face criminal prosecution.
Asked whether the former Speaker would still be prosecuted, Muhoozi replied: “No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her.”
The statement appears to signal that Museveni has opted for forgiveness rather than criminal prosecution in Among’s case.
The development is particularly significant because security agencies had previously searched properties associated with Among in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea as part of investigations. Several high-value vehicles were also reportedly seized during the operations.
Among’s lead lawyer, Caleb Alaka, confirmed that his client would be released.
Asked whether the release was temporary, Alaka reportedly clarified that it would be permanent, rather than a temporary arrangement to facilitate medical treatment.
“We are very grateful that the President has agreed to release her,” Alaka said, according to New Vision.
The decision comes after weeks of intense political attention surrounding the former Speaker, whose removal from the centre of political power marked one of the most significant developments in Uganda’s political landscape this year.
Among, who served as Speaker of the 11th Parliament, became the subject of heightened scrutiny after security agencies launched investigations into allegations surrounding the management of Parliament and her wealth.
The investigations also resulted in arrests and prosecution of several senior Parliament officials over alleged corruption-related offences. Among herself, however, had not been charged with a criminal offence at the time of the reported presidential intervention.
Museveni’s decision therefore appears to bring a major shift in the government’s handling of the former Speaker’s case.
The announcement also places Gen. Muhoozi at the centre of the latest development, with the CDF publicly communicating the President’s directive and saying he would personally ensure its implementation.
For now, the exact timing and procedure for Among’s release have not been publicly detailed, although her legal team says she is to be freed permanently.
The development is likely to generate significant political debate, particularly over Museveni’s decision to forgive Among and halt any prospective prosecution despite the investigations that had surrounded her.
