A chilling account has emerged from members of the National Unity Platform (NUP), detailing a violent abduction that occurred at the party’s headquarters on March 23, 2023.
According to survivors of the incident, a group of unidentified, armed men—dressed in plain clothes and bearing no official insignia—raided the premises without warning. They ordered everyone inside to lie face down and then blindfolded them using black cloths to prevent them from seeing where they were being taken.
“We kept asking what crime we had committed, but they only told us to keep quiet,” said one of the abducted individuals, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. “They never told us who they were, and we had no idea where they were taking us,” said Namuwanga Sandra.
The victims identified as Lillian Gonza, Namuwanga Sandra, Ismail Ntage, and Musa Lugya were transported to an unknown location and detained incommunicado for four days. During this time, they were subjected to harsh interrogations, with the captors repeatedly questioning them about the nature of discussions and activities taking place at the NUP offices.
“They kept asking what we were planning, who we were meeting, and what discussions we were having. It was clear they were trying to fabricate a connection to some kind of plot, but we had nothing to hide,” added Namuwanga Sandra.
The abduction has raised fresh alarm over the increasing crackdown on opposition supporters in Uganda. Human rights organizations and legal observers have condemned the incident and called for immediate, transparent investigations.
Despite growing outcry, authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the incident. NUP officials have strongly denounced the attack, describing it as a deliberate act of political repression, and are demanding justice and accountability for those involved.
