Police in Kanungu district have launched investigations into the tragic death of a 40-year-old man.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police spokesperson, identified the deceased as Justus Besigensi, a retired teacher and a resident of Nyakijojwa village in Nyakijojwa parish of Kanungu district.

Maate told our reporter today that the deceased allegedly committed suicide by hanging with a rope. He noted that Agatha Tugumisirize, a nursing officer at Katete Health Centre III and wife to the deceased, left him at their house at around 10 am and went to normal work. However, upon her return, she discovered the husband’s lifeless body suspended in a rope.

Tugumisirize reported the matter to Katete Police Station whose officers visited the scene, examined it and conveyed the body of the deceased to Katete Health Centre III for autopsy, before handing it over to the relatives for burial. Preliminary information indicates that Besigensi has for long battled a mental illness, which led to his termination from a private school teaching position in 2022.

Maate adds that the suicide case has been registered at Kanungu Central Police Station vide CRB 332/2023.
