KABALE The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwiine, cautioned young adults against the use of toxic substances for a brighter life.
Dr. Atwiine issued this warning on Wednesday, 8th November 2023, while addressing students at an outreach event organized by the Ministry of Health at Kabale University in the event focusing on providing integrated sexual reproductive health/HIV/gender-based violence and mental health services under the theme “Bridging the Gap in Access to Sexual Reproductive Health Information and Services for Young People.”
Dr. Atwiine pointed out that many youths are consistently using toxic substances such as marijuana and alcohol, which pose serious dangers to their lives. She emphasized that these substances lead to mental health problems and trauma, significantly impacting young adults and hindering their future opportunities.
Additionally, Dr. Atwiine highlighted the challenges that arise after using toxic substances, including teenage pregnancies and school dropouts. She advised young adults to actively participate in workshops like the one organized at Kabale University, where they can learn about the dangers and problems associated with substance abuse.
Prof. Joy C. Kwesiga, the Vice-Chancellor of Kabale University, stated that young adults lack appropriate information about crucial areas of concern. She added that young adults often seek information from low-knowledge groups and peers who do not provide accurate information.She urged the ministry to consider creating accessible information centers like in hospitals and open places to address this issue.
