Rubanda District, Uganda – Shebeya Health Center II, a vital government health facility located in Shebeya Parish of Hamurwa sub-county, is grappling with significant challenges that are affecting its ability to provide essential healthcare services.

According to Stuart Mujurizi the facility in-charge says that the center has been plunged into darkness due to the lack of electricity and an unfunctional solar system, severely impacting its operations explaining that the absence of reliable power has disrupted critical medical services, including emergency care and routine procedures that require electricity.

Mujurizi explains the Healthcare workers at the facility are forced to rely on alternative methods such as using torches and candles during nighttime operations, which compromises the quality of care provided to patients.

In addition to the power issues, Shebeya Health Center II faces accessibility problems due to the poor road network leading to the facility where the deteriorating roads have hindered service delivery, making it difficult for residents of Shebeya Parish and neighboring areas to access timely medical assistance where Patients often face delays in reaching the health center, and ambulances struggle to navigate the rough terrain, further exacerbating the situation.

When contacted, Dr. Abdon Birungi the Rubanda District Health Officer (DHO) explained that, soon they are constructing a maternity ward by Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and solar system is part of the package saying even the space present is enough to accommodate the facility and a staff house at the level of health center II.
