RUBANDA-A family in Rubanda District is demanding justice after a suspect accused of assaulting their son was released from police custody under unclear circumstances.

According to Moses Birija, the father of the victim, Kevin Akampwera, the assault took place on 27th July 2025 at around 9:38 p.m. in Kyitwego Village, Nyarusheija Ward, Kacerere Town Council.

The suspect, identified as Sunday Edward, allegedly attacked Akampwera, leaving him critically injured.

Akampwera was first rushed to Kacerere Health Centre II before being transferred to Muko Health Centre IV.

As his condition worsened, he was referred to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment. He was later discharged and is currently recovering at home.

Bireje said the suspect was arrested on 6th August 2025 with the help of Bufundi Police and taken to Rubanda District Police Headquarters the following day. A case of assault was registered under file number CRB 272/25.

However, Birija says he was shocked to see the suspect freely moving around Kacerere Town Council shortly afterward.

“When I saw him walking freely, I felt betrayed. We want justice to prevail,” Bireje told our reporter.

When contacted, Rubanda District Police Commander SP Abel Barugahare confirmed the suspect’s release, saying it was done on police bond.

He explained that police bond is a constitutional right, and no suspect should be held in custody for more than 48 hours, regardless of the nature of the case.

Barugahare added that the suspect’s case file has been forwarded to the State Attorney’s office in Kabale for further management.
