Kabale-The Kabale Chief Magistrate’s Court has charged and remanded local businessman Sophan Mutahunga, proprietor of Muta Kitchenware, alongside co-accused Byamukama Emmanuel and Byaruhanga Louben, in connection with the alleged murder of a 36-year-old vendor, Berdan Niwamanya.

The prosecution, led by Kabale Senior State Attorney Julie Nanjjuju, told the court presided over by His Worship Derrick Byamugisha that the trio is accused of causing the intentional death of Niwamanya on August 8, 2025, in Kigongi, Kabale Municipality.

The charges are brought under Sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act, which define and penalize murder.

Given the seriousness of the offence, classified as a capital crime under Ugandan law, the Magistrate’s Court lacks jurisdiction to try the matter. The accused were therefore not allowed to enter pleas during the session.

State Attorney Nanjjuju informed the court that investigations are still ongoing. The suspects have been remanded to Ndorwa Government Prison until September 8, 2025, when the case will come up for mention.

The murder charge carries a maximum sentence of death upon conviction.
