Rukungiri-Residents of Katerampungu Parish in Bugangari Subcounty, Rukungiri District, have raised alarm over the deplorable state of roads in their area, calling on the government and local leaders to urgently intervene and improve infrastructure.
The concerns were raised during a campaign rally held by aspiring Woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri District, Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye, at Nyangajara Primary School playground in Nyangajara B Cell.
Residents cited the Omukarere–Rugarama trading center road as one of the worst affected, describing it as nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season.“The road becomes a nightmare when it rains. Vehicles get stuck, and movement is almost impossible,” said Jon Ahimbisibwe, one of the concerned residents.
Other residents, including Allan Gumisiriza and Doreen Owembabazi, echoed similar sentiments, warning that poor road conditions are hindering development and access to basic services in the area.Josephate Tumwebaze, LC1 Chairperson of Nyangajara Cell, confirmed that no government funding has ever been allocated for road works in the area.
He said residents had previously relied on communal labor to maintain the roads but the effort is no longer sustainable. Tumwebaze called on both the government and aspiring leaders to take urgent action.
In response, Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye acknowledged the residents’ concerns and pledged to be their voice in Parliament if elected. She emphasized the need for leaders who understand and prioritize local issues such as roads, electricity, and clean water.
“Our people continue to suffer because their challenges are not well represented in Parliament,” she said. “If elected, I will advocate for equitable service delivery and ensure critical infrastructure issues like these are addressed.”
Nuwagaba urged residents to vote for leaders who are people-centered and not self-serving, promising that her leadership would focus on inclusive development and uplifting underserved communities.
The rally highlighted a growing call for improved infrastructure across rural Rukungiri as the 2026 general elections approach.
