Rukungiri-Aspiring Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament, Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye, has called on residents of Katonya Parish in Nyakishenyi Subcounty to embrace handcrafts as a practical way to improve their household incomes.
Nuwagaba made the remarks during a campaign rally held today at Kirimbe Trading Centre in Nyakishenyi Subcounty, where she emphasized the potential of handcrafts in supplementing other sources of income for rural families.
“Handcrafts can play a critical role in supporting household earnings, especially for women and youth. We must tap into our talents to create economic opportunities,” she told a cheering crowd.
However, residents used the platform to voice deep concerns over broken social services, including poor road infrastructure, water scarcity, and dilapidated health and education facilities.
In her response, Nuwagaba pledged to be a strong voice for the people in Parliament if elected, promising to advocate for the improvement of key sectors that have long been neglected.
“These sectors remain underdeveloped because they lack effective representation in Parliament. I promise to be a people-centered leader who speaks your truth on the national stage,” she said.
She also urged local leaders to avoid selfish interests and instead work towards community-centered development.
Among the residents who expressed support for Nuwagaba’s candidacy were Turinawe Justus, Kembazi Anita, and John Gomushabe, who said the time had come to elect leaders who understand and prioritize local issues.> “We are tired of voting for leaders who have offered us nothing.
This time, we want someone who knows our problems and will work to solve them,” one of the residents said.As the 2026 general elections approach, Nuwagaba’s message of economic empowerment and responsive leadership appears to be resonating with many in Rukungiri.
