Vivo Energy Uganda has today launched a Shell Gas bulk tank installation at Nabisunsa Girls’ School, reaffirming its commitment to supporting educational institutions across Uganda in adopting safe, clean and efficient energy solutions.
The installation is part of Vivo Energy Uganda’s ongoing efforts to promote the transition from traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and charcoal to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as Shell Gas. The initiative aligns with the Government of Uganda’s drive towards clean energy adoption and environmental conservation through reduced dependence on biomass fuels.
The Shell Gas Bulk Tank facility installed at Nabisunsa Girls’ School comprises a high-capacity LPG storage tank, a fully engineered gas distribution system, pressure-regulation equipment, safety shut-off mechanisms, gas-leak detection systems, fire-protection equipment, and comprehensive safety information and signage. The installation was undertaken by qualified professionals in accordance with national and international LPG safety standards.
The system is designed to provide a reliable and continuous supply of gas to the school’s kitchen operations while ensuring the highest safety standards. Before commissioning, the installation underwent rigorous testing, inspection, and safety assessments. In addition, kitchen staff and designated school personnel received training on safe LPG handling, emergency response procedures, and best practices for operating the facility.
Speaking during the launch, Mrs Joanita Mukasa Menya, the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Uganda said: “True sustainable development begins with practical solutions where they matter the most. By partnering with historic institutions like Nabisunsa Girls’ School, Vivo Energy Uganda is driving a critical shift away from traditional firewood and charcoal toward cleaner, modern energy. Transitioning to Shell Gas isn’t just an operational upgrade; it’s a direct commitment to protecting our environment, safeguarding the health of our students and kitchen staff from harmful emissions, and fostering safer, healthier learning environments across Uganda.”
The adoption of Shell Gas offers several advantages for educational institutions. Schools benefit from reduced cooking times, improved kitchen hygiene, lower maintenance requirements, reduced smoke emissions, enhanced safety through professionally managed installations, and more predictable energy costs. The use of LPG also eliminates exposure to harmful smoke associated with firewood and charcoal, creating healthier working environments for kitchen employees.
Vivo Energy Uganda’s LPG Manager Alvin Bamutire said: “From an operational standpoint, this Shell Gas installation proves that high-volume institutional cooking can be safe, seamless, and cost-effective. But Nabisunsa Girls’ School is just the beginning. We are on a dedicated drive to roll out this bulk gas technology to schools across the country, replacing outdated, inefficient infrastructure with modern energy systems. By scaling this initiative nationwide, we are actively championing clean energy transition at the grassroots level, which is a key milestone in our quest to become the leading and most respected energy business in Uganda.”
Miss Hajjati Janat Kakumba Namujuzi, the Headmistress of Nabisunsa Girls’ School, welcomed the partnership, saying: “This investment marks an important milestone for our school. The Shell Gas installation will improve efficiency in our kitchen operations, support a cleaner environment, and provide a safer and healthier cooking solution for our school community.”
Adding, “This partnership with Vivo Energy Uganda has set a new standard for what a modern, sustainable educational environment looks like in Uganda and ultimately lifts a massive operational burden off our shoulders, allowing us to focus our energy into what matters most, that is nourishing and educating the next generation.”
Nabisunsa Girls’ School joins a growing number of educational institutions that have transitioned from the use of firewood and alternative means of traditional cooking fuel to the safer, reliable and more environmentally cleaner Shell Gas, including King’s College Budo, St Peter’s College Bombo Kalule, Kibuli Secondary School, Kiira College Butiki, Lubiri Secondary School and many others across Uganda.
