1 dead, several injured after Train collides with bus in Mukono

MUKONO — Police in Mukono are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. today at Namumira–Bukasa Village, Kyetume Parish, Nakisunga Sub-county, along Katosi Road in Mukono District.

The crash involved a train and a bus transporting students of Mwebaze High School, Kakiri, who were travelling to Jinja District for an educational trip.

According to police, one female passenger died at the scene. Several other students sustained injuries.  

Police officers, working with other emergency responders, are evacuating the injured to 

Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.

SP Racheal Kawala, PRO KMP, confirmed that police have secured the scene and commenced investigations to establish the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the crash.

“Further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available,” SP Kawala said.

Authorities are yet to establish whether the crossing had functioning barriers, warning signals, or personnel at the time of the accident.  

Rail and road safety advocates have repeatedly called for increased sensitization and infrastructure at unmanned railway crossings, especially on busy routes like Katosi Road.

The bus, school, and railway operator are expected to record statements as part of the ongoing investigations.
