From artists and dancers to brands, events and entertainment platforms, Julius Kyazze has built much of his reputation away from the microphone and outside the spotlight.
Now, the spotlight has found him as he has been named among Africa’s 100 Most Influential Africans, recognition that comes at a time when his career is increasingly stretching beyond Uganda’s entertainment industry into the wider African creative economy.
Yet for a man who has spent years building behind the scenes, the recognition appears to have caught him in a reflective mood rather than a celebratory one.
“I’ve always been more comfortable building than talking about the building,” Kyazze said in a social media post.
Together with producer Benon Mugumbya, Kyazze helped build Swangz into a major Ugandan creative company, moving beyond music production into video, advertising, events and talent management.
The company became associated with several artists who went on to become important names in Uganda’s music industry, while its production work also placed it firmly in the corporate world.
His involvement in sports management added another dimension, while his latest venture, Live54+, has pushed his work further into the regional creative economy.
Through Live54+, Kyazze has been involved in events, experiences and creative projects that bring together artists, brands, audiences and businesses. The company’s expansion across African markets reflects an increasingly continental approach to entertainment and creative enterprise.
For Kyazze, the bigger opportunity lies in what Africa can build around its creativity.
“What began with a few ideas, a lot of belief and probably more stubbornness than strategy has grown into businesses, platforms, artists, experiences and teams across the continent,” he said.
The recognition, therefore, appears to be less about arriving at the top and more about acknowledging the journey.
“Not because the work is done. Far from it,” he added. “There is still a lot to build.”
That may be the most revealing part of Kyazze’s latest achievement.
After years of helping build stages for others, he has finally found himself standing on one, but he appears more interested in what comes after the applause.
