KAMPALA, UGANDA – A powerful new convening of CSO, CBOs, private sector innovators, civil society, and youth advocates has officially launched REPower Uganda, a landmark initiative designed to unify the nation’s renewable energy advocacy and dismantle barriers to clean energy access.

The launch took place during an intensive five-day multi-stakeholder workshop from the 20th – 24th of April 2026, serving as a cocktail of strategic planning and alliance building.
This was at Fairway Hotel in Kampala.

The event brought together CSOs, CBOs, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Ministry of Water and Environment and the media to move beyond fragmented efforts and establish a singular, powerful voice for Uganda’s clean energy future.

A Unified Front for Energy Transformation

REPower Uganda arrives at a critical juncture as the nation seeks to balance rapid economic growth with climate resilience. The workshop focused on four strategic pillars:

Sector Integration: Merging the influence of high-level policymakers with the lived experience of grassroots organizers.

Gap Analysis: Mapping the current landscape to identify technical and regulatory bottlenecks that stall renewable projects.

Alliance Building: Creating a permanent, committed partnership with strong and allied working groups.

Tactical Roadmap: Developing an intervention plan with specific milestones for legislative and community-level impact.

“We aren’t just launching a project; we’re fundamentally rewriting the rulebook for energy advocacy in Uganda. For too long, energy policy has been a top-down affair. By bringing youth groups and local communities to the same table as the private sector, we’re moving away from token gestures and towards genuine co-design. From ring-fencing national budgets for clean energy to decentralising oversight to our districts, we’re ensuring that Uganda’s transition isn’t just fast ; it’s fair, locally tailored, and built to last.” – Rukiya Khamis, Programme Manager – 350 East Africa noted.

Energy ministry’s Emmanuel Muliisa

“On behalf of the Ministry of Energy, we warmly welcome initiatives that help us deliver the core pillars of Uganda’s Just Transition Plan. It is exactly this kind of cross-sector collaboration that we are committed to fostering, ensuring our energy future is both sustainable and inclusive,” said Emmanuel Muliisa, Clean Cooking Officer Capacity Building and Awareness, Clean Cooking Unit Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.

REPower Uganda is a multi-stakeholder campaign dedicated to unblocking the barriers to renewable energy adoption in Uganda. By fostering collaboration and co designing between the government, the private sector, and local communities, the initiative aims to create a sustainable, reliable, and equitable energy landscape for all Ugandans.
