RUKIGA-Ninsiima Evelyn Kikafunda, the President of the Green Environment program and the board member of the international of the Banyakigezi (ICOB), has implored former students of the school to create a support program for students in the work and study program, helping them pursue their dreams beyond secondary education.
Kikafunda made these remarks yesterday during a fundraising event aimed at establishing a computer center at the school.
Speaking to our reporter shortly after the function, Kikafunda urged the alumni to always think about the students’ lives after their secondary education, calling on them to provide financial assistance. Kikafunda revealed that she was shocked when she encountered a current head boy of the school who had to join a work and study program due to a lack of school fees.
She challenged the alumni to create a fund for the students in the work and study program, enabling them to further their studies and leaving a lasting legacy by promoting education. Kikafunda, a sustainable development consultant, called upon the school’s alumni to initiate programs to support the education of underprivileged students, similar to the head boy’s situation.

The head teacher of Kihanga secondary school, Rukundo Onesimus Rurihona, revealed that the work and study program was established in 2013 with four students. Now, it caters to 20 students, providing support to underprivileged students in paying their school fees, and it has successfully graduated several students, some of whom have already completed university. He emphasized that the program is for well-behaved students, and their performance in class must be good.
Speaking to our reporter, Balaam Niwamanya the school head boy, a student benefiting from the program, expressed that he feels content and satisfied with the work and study program, despite facing some challenges such as students and staff not fully recognizing his role as the head boy.
